I am directed by the Duke of Newcastle to instruct you to issue to Mr. J. Thornton of the Harbour Master's department, Hong Kong, half salary at the rate of £200 per annum, in accordance with the enclosed certificate; such issue to date from the 1st of August last.
Mr. Thornton originally received twelve months' leave from the Governor of Hongkong, that leave expiring on the 31st of last July. During that period he drew his half salary through his agent in the Colony. He subsequently received from the Duke of Newcastle an extension of his leave for six months, of which extension the Governor was informed.
